- 5 ships for Korea Coast Guard (KCG), Ministry of Public Safety and Security, displaying excellence in the construction of special-purpose vessels
Recently, HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction has displayed its excellence in the construction of special-purpose vessels by winning a bid to build five 500-tonne patrol ships.
On November 1, HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction announced that it signed a contract to build five 500-tonne patrol ships (500t) for Korea Coast Guard (KCG), Ministry of Public Safety and Security at KRW 158.9 billion with Public Procurement Service (PPS).
The global shipbuilding company already built and handed over diverse guard ships including the 3,000- tonne patrol ship to the KCG successfully in the past. This time, it signed a contract to build five 500- tonne patrol ships additionally, proving its dominance in patrol ships.
The patrol ship is as large as 63.2m in length, 9.1m in width and 5m in height. If fully loaded, its displacement tonnage reaches up to 640 tons.
It features a high-speed water jet engine which can generate a speed of up to 35 knots (65km/h). This state-of-the-art patrol ship will be built under advanced design, using high-strength steels (HSS) and aluminum alloys.
In particular, its maximum range – maximum distance a ship can travel given a fixed amount of fuel – would be as high as 3,700km, which means that this ship is able to respond to various maritime accidents and illegal fishing on time.
The patrol ships will be built at HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction¡¯s Yeongdo Shipyard for about 3 years and handed over to KCG, Ministry of Public Safety and Security by 2020. They would take care of maritime security and sea rescue operations.
Started with 'Haksaeng,' the first home-manufactured coast guard ship in 1972, HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction has built diverse patrol ships for the KCG and the ROK Navy. In fact, it has built the largest number of warships in Korea.
Especially, since named as the builder of the second Dokdo-class ship in late 2014, the Korean shipbuilder has signed about KRW 1 trillion contracts for the recent two years including diverse training ships, PKXs and patrol ships, displaying its excellence in special-purpose vessels.
An official from HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction said, ¡°These days, many people are concerned about maritime sovereignty such as illegal fishing.
