- Wins 6 containership orders (11,000-TEU) in addition to 20,000TEU container ships - A total of KRW 1.1 trillion worth of ultra large ship orders in April alone HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC)-Phil’s Subic Shipyard hit the jackpot bids. On April 20, the company said that it signed a deal to build six 11,000-TEU containerships for European and Asian shipping companies. The shipyard won six 11,000-TEU containership orders additionally after successfully landing a deal to build three 26,000-TEU containerships early in this month. In all, it has won nine ship orders for the month, worth KRW 1.1 trillion. The containerships the Subic Shipyard will build have dimensions of 330 meters in length, 48 meters in breadth, and 27 meters in depth. Designed with state-of-the-art technology in the hull and propeller, the vessels are high in fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness. Until recently, the HHIC had been unable to take part in large-scale shipbuilding biddings because of small space in its Yeongdo (Busan) dockyard. After having launched the world's largest shipyard in Subic, the Philippines, however, the Korean shipbuilder has won landmark deals one after another. In particular, ever since it had received orders for 300,000DWT Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) for the first time last year, the global shipbuilder established a bridgehead into the very large shipbuilding market by even winning 11,000-TEU container ship orders. Entering this year, the Subic Shipyard handed a deal to build the world’s largest (26,000 TEU-level) container ships. An official from the HHIC said, “Based on extensive knowhow and advanced technology in the construction of container ships, we have received orders in a row, which would result in some increase in revenue.” He continued, “The normalization of Yeongdo Shipyard would further enhance our performances and have a significant effect on our global reputation.” The HHIC targets to evolve into the world’s leading shipbuilder by maximizing the efficiency of its production system with a two-track strategy which means that Subic Shipyard specializes in the production of large vessels and offshore plants while Yeongdo Dockyard focuses on mid-size and special-purpose vessels. The official added, “Right now, a number of deals are in discussion as well thanks to the improvement of Yeongdo and Subic Shipyards’ production systems. We expect some more orders soon.” |
